HI, I’M BENTLEY!
mother, educator, doula
Above all else, I’m a mom.
I take so much pride in being a mom—I truly believe it is central to my life’s purpose. It is also why I love supporting and nourishing other moms throughout their own motherhood journeys.
I am also a wife, baker, hiker, reproductive health advocate, and birth nerd. Born and raised in Colorado, the mountains are my home and my favorite place to be. But I also love to travel! I’ve been lucky to live in some other incredible places, including Southern California, Oregon, Italy, and New Zealand.
Where it all started.
I completed my DONA doula certification in 2019 while living in Portland, Oregon. I signed up for the training without ever having witnessed or supported a live birth. At the time, I was deep in a phase of researching reproductive health. I had lost my menstrual cycle for two years and after being told it would be difficult for me to conceive naturally, I was determined to learn everything I possibly could about my body. Learning about the female body naturally led into learning about conception, pregnancy, and birth, and I was automatically hooked. I was also nannying at the time and the family I worked for had a postpartum doula and raved about how helpful she was. So I found a doula training and never looked back.
After completing my training and certification, I started working as a volunteer doula supporting people on Medicaid. This experience quickly showed me that birth isn’t just about the body, and is so often impacted by care providers and the medical system at large, particularly for people with marginalized identities. I learned about amazing organizations doing incredible work to forward birth justice and decided I wanted to be part of this movement. At the end of 2019, my now husband and I moved back to Colorado so I could attend graduate school to pursue my Master’s in Communication Studies at Colorado State University.
While at CSU, I continued working as a birth and postpartum doula for private and volunteer clients.I received my MA in 2021 and in addition to my doula work, I am also a researcher passionate about conducting research to forward our understanding of health disparities and move towards health equity. My research is grounded in my interest in supportive communication, reproductive health communication, identity, and equity.
Now, today….
I got pregnant with my first in 2021 and my experience during pregnancy, birth, and postpartum has impacted my doula work in a beautiful way. I truly believe you do not need to be a mother to be a good doula, however my personal experience humbled me in a way that has made it easier for me to relate to my clients on a deeper level.
We do not live in a society that adequately supports new parents and I want to be part of that solution. I want to help you go into your birth experience feeling respected and held. And postpartum, I want you to feel nourished, powerful, and loved. It’s what you deserve.
I can't wait to meet you and chat about how I can help you achieve your unique goals for birth and postpartum. Whether you're a first-time parent or preparing for a different experience in subsequent births, I'm here for you every step of the way.
